Plastered my living room ceiling

Top Tip: Use water in a spray mist to avoid plater drying quickly

Who are you?

Penny Morton, 25, Project Engineer

What did you do?

I plastered my own ceiling using a kit from B+Q after it had a huge hole in it.

When did you do this?

July 2021 - when I was renovating my flat

Why did you do it?

To save money mostly ... but I also love a challenge. I figured it would be a useful skill to have up my sleeve, but after a couple days of intense ceiling work involving a bent neck and holding my arms above my head I was starting to think I should've got a quote for a plasterer....no regrets though! It's worth it every time I sit down on my sofa and look up to my slightly imperfect ceiling and think "I did that!"

How did you do it?

  1. Removed the hideous construction attached to the ceiling before which revealed a massive hole (probably why it was there in the first place!)

  2. Cut into the ceiling (this felt so odd) to make a perfect rectangle which could then be replaced with new plasterboard

  3. Removed the Artex on ceiling with a steamer (messy job - wear a mask)

  4. Applied a layer of plaster to the ceiling using a roller to get it to stick to the ceiling and then a scraper to smooth it out (worked in smaller square sections across the ceiling)

  5. Applied a second layer of thinner plaster and then sanded once dry

  6. Painted with anti glare white ceiling paint
